The 2018-19 Premier League season is underway.
Pogba sends a beautiful cross-field pass into the feet of Darmian on the right flank, but the Italian loses out to Chilwell.
The Premier League returns after a busy summer of World Cup football, which left clubs scrambling at the last minute to get transfers over the line yesterday. Some were more successful than others, with United being one of the teams that were frustrated by their relative inactivity. It will be interesting to see how it affects their start to the campaign.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Leicester City at Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho has been critical of United's lack of investment over the summer. He spoke of his frustration during the club's tour of the United States. Defeats to Liverpool and Bayern Munich highlighted the issue, although they were able to defeat Real Madrid. The pressure is on the Red Devils to make a fast start to the campaign.
One of United's high-profile transfer targets from the summer lines up against them this evening. Harry Maguire caught the eye with his impressive performances for England at the World Cup. The Foxes were able to retain the services of the defender, although Leicester were dealt a blow with the departure of Riyad Mahrez.
James Maddison has arrived to replace Mahrez in the attacking role behind Jamie Vardy, while Ricardo Pereira was also among the new signings in the summer. Jonny Evans was an astute purchase for just £3.5m from West Brom, while Caglar Soyuncu and Filip Benkovic signed on transfer deadline day.
For all of Mourinho's complaints, he was still able to sign a fine player in the form of Fred to strengthen the middle of the park. The Brazilian was a standout player for Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League campaign last season, he should add an extra touch of quality in and around the ball along with set-pieces.
Let's take a look at the two teams for tonight, starting with the home side.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-3-3): David de Gea; Matteo Darmian, Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw; Fred, Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba; Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez.
Manchester United subs: Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Lee Grant, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Scott McTominay.
LEICESTER CITY (4-2-3-1): Kasper Schmeichel; Daniel Amartey, Wes Morgan, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell; Wilfried Ndidi, Adrien Silva; Ricardo Pereira, James Maddison, Demarai Gray; Kelechi Iheanacho.
Leicester City subs: Jonny Evans, Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton, Danny Ward, Vicente Iborra, Christian Fuchs, Rachid Ghezzal.
Mourinho hands a Premier League debut to Fred in the middle of the park alongside Andreas Pereira and Pogba, who starts despite being just four weeks removed from the World Cup final and having had no time in pre-season on the field. Rashford also starts to lead the line after playing deep into the competition with England. Lukaku starts on the bench with Fellaini and Young, completing the World Cup returnees.
Puel puts Maguire in the middle of the defence, although he has had little time to prepare after being given extended time away after the World Cup. Vardy is left on the bench as Iheanacho leads the line, supported by new signings Maddison and Ricardo Pereira along with Gray.
Manchester United hold a 1-0 lead at the break against Leicester at Old Trafford. The Red Devils had a dream start to the contest when they were awarded a penalty in the second minute. Paul Pogba converted the spot-kick to open his account for the new season. However, the home side were not able to kick on and struggled to contain the Foxes at times. James Maddison came close to bringing the visitors back into the game, only to be denied by David de Gea. The game remains in the balance at half-time.
Jose Mourinho will be content with the scoreline, although maybe not the performance of his team. They've been a bit too passive at times in their approach with Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford rarely involved. Leicester have looked the brighter side, with Maddison along with Demarai Gray providing a threat. Jamie Vardy may be brought on in place of Kelechi Iheanacho, who has just lacked a clinical edge in the final third.
Manchester United begin the season with a victory thanks to goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw. Jamie Vardy made the last couple of minutes interesting with a late strike, but the Red Devils held their nerve to secure the three points.
It was not a perfect performance from United by any means, but Jose Mourinho will be pleased to get off the mark with a win. Claude Puel will be satisfied with the effort of his players, although they lacked a clinical edge at times in the final third. There's plenty of room for improvement from both sides.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
