Hello and welcome to live coverage of the EFL Cup round of 16 meeting between Manchester City and Southampton at the Etihad Stadium!
City progressed to this round with a 3-0 win over Preston North End in the last round and have enjoyed a good run of results since. The current holders have lost just one of their six matches in all competitions since then (a 2-0 defeat to Wolves) but have won the other five. Southampton, on the other hand, have been struggling recently. They are winless in their four games since beating Portsmouth 4-0 in the last round (D1 L3) and suffered a humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester City at home on Friday.
MANCHESTER CITY STARTING XI (4-3-3): Claudio Bravo; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Eric Garcia, Angelino; Bernardo Silva, Tommy Doyle, Phil Foden; Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Scott Carson, John Stones, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Ian Carlo Poveda-Ocampo, Joao Cancelo, Adrian Bernabe.
SOUTHAMPTON STARTING XI (4-3-3): Alex McCarthy; Yan Valery, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, Kevin Danso; James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg; Stuart Armstrong, Shane Long, Sofiane Boufal.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Angus Gunn, Jake Vokins, Jannik Vestergaard, Danny Ings, Nathan Redmond, Che Adams, Maya Yoshida.
This is the fourth time City have been drawn against Southampton in the EFL Cup, having been eliminated on each previous occasion (1978-79, 1982-83 and 1999-2000).
The teams are out on the field now, with kick-off just moments away.
Guardiola will probably think his side should be further ahead at the break due to the number of opportunities his side have had and he will no doubt want them to add to their goal tally to give them a more comfortable lead in the second half. Southampton haven't had a single shot, after struggling to get out of their own half for most of the game, and Hasenhuttl will want them to take more risks when they come back out.
So, City's defence of the trophy continues but they will have to wait until tomorrow to find out who they'll face in the next round of the competition. Southampton's run in the competition has come to an end, so their focus will change back to the league where they currently sit in the relegation zone. It doesn't get any easier for them though as they return to the Etihad on Saturday to face City again.
